- The Laboratory of Plant Systematics (K.U.Leuven, Belgium) today released Carnoy. Carnoy is an easy-to-use image analysis program, designed to carry out measurements on digital images and especially on micrographs obtained from light or electron microscopes.

- GraphicConverter – a shareware program to convert a large number of file formats, multiple changing, and image processing. Current version for MAC is 4.9.3. for OS X panther. Older versions can be downloaded from the author's website.

- One of the best identification programs is DELTA. It is free to download on www.coleoptera.org section software house.
- Identification is also possible with LINNAEUS II (pdf, 64 kB) – newly updated to Version 2.5 by ETI Bio-Informatics Center. Download for free after a simple registration.
- Treefinder There is a more realistic model for protein coding sequences, which is assuming independent rates at the three codon positions. The relative codon position rates can be estimated from the data. Codon position heterogeneity can be combined orthogonally with the usual Gamma heterogeneity and all the substitution models up to the GTR. TREEFINDER can now perform ML bootstrap analysis to assess the confidence of inferred relationships. As a special feature, it has a consensus routine that is producing trees with edge lengths. The possibility of specifying topological constraints lets one incorporate ideas about the prior distribution of phylogenetic trees to direct the search. As usual, the new version is coming with an improved graphical frontend and some minor bug-fixes. The tree viewer is now accepting rooted trees as an input. - AFRICAN ENTOMOLOGY (WORKING BIBLIOGRAPHY): Partial bibliography of systematics and ecology of Afrotropical insects, with over 4500 citations to papers on the systematics, distribution, and ecology of insects of Africa south of the Sahara.
- AFRICAN INSECT CHECKLIST (IN PROGRESS): Currently includes about 20% of the known Aftrotropical insects, specifically Odonata, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Homoptera.
